Whether you’re a fan of resolutions or not, there’s no denying that a new year is a great time to start good habits and ditch the bad ones. As a sparkie, there are a few simple things you can do to set yourself up for a great year – here’s our top 3 tips to make 2018 your best one yet.
1. Look After Yourself
Getting healthy is probably the most common resolution for people across the world. While everybody has their weaknesses, looking after yourself doesn’t mean giving up all the good stuff. Most experts agree it’s fine to indulge or take a break from exercise occasionally, as long as you’re doing the right things most of the time.
For electricians, our job is demanding, and if you’re not in decent shape, it’s that much harder. If there’s room for improvement, making a few small changes can make a massive difference. If you buy a burger or pie for lunch every day, try bringing a roll to work one or two days a week. Aim to get the takeaway down to one day a week – you’ll feel better and save money. If you don’t already exercise, find something you like doing and have a go. Again, start small and try and build up to 3 three times a week. Don’t forget your mental state too – if you have a tendency to work too hard, make sure you’re taking regular breaks through the day and scheduling time off to recharge the batteries.
2. Sort Out Your Paperwork
If you run your own electrical business, it’s probably a safe bet to say paperwork is not your favourite part of the job. But unless you have a family member or friend who has kindly offered to do your books, it has to be done. And if you neglect it, it can turn into a nightmare situation fast.
Piling up your invoices up in a corner somewhere to deal with later is not ideal. Your best bet is to invest a little time in finding and setting up a system that works for you - then stay on top of it! There are plenty of options when it comes to accounting software, and if you have a reasonable-sized business, doing it this way can save you a heap of time and lots of headaches. Otherwise, you can always opt to use a simple spreadsheet, as this will work fine if things are not overly complicated. Check out what’s out there, and get your backroom sorted. It will take a weight off your shoulders, especially when tax time rolls around.
3. Get Your Tools Organised
Maybe you’re a neat freak when it comes to your tools, and if so keep it up – they’ll last longer, and you’ll find what you need faster. But if you’ve let things get a little out of hand, the new year is the perfect time to organise your tools once and for all.
Having the right storage is essential for organisation. Start by getting a good setup in your van or ute. There are some excellent shelving solutions for vans on the market, and secured tool boxes for utes. If you already have a decent toolbox or tool bag, but it could do with a clean out, get it done. If your current box or bag has seen better days or doesn’t quite meet your needs, do some research to see if there’s a better option and consider replacing it. The time and money you spend on a good storage system will be worth it – you’ll always find what you need fast, your tools will stay in good shape, and it will make your day much easier.
Final Word on Resolutions for Sparkies
As you prepare to wind-up for the year and hopefully take a well-earned break, have a think about how you can make 2018 a winning year. Whether it’s a change in diet, a re-think of your paperwork practises or an overhaul of your tool storage, you’ll be surprised how good it feels to kick a bad habit and start fresh with a new one.
